ABOUT BISHOP NYKYTA BUDKA

Blessed Martyr Bishop Nykyta Budka (1877–1949)

Blessed Nykyta Budka is a central figure in Ukrainian, Canadian, and Catholic history. On 15 July 1912, he was appointed the first Ukrainian Catholic Bishop in Canada, marking the first time the Apostolic See named an Eastern Catholic bishop with full jurisdiction outside Europe and Asia.

Pioneer Bishop in Canada

From 1912 to 1928, Bishop Budka travelled tirelessly across Canada, ministering to Ukrainian immigrant communities scattered across vast distances. He celebrated the Sacraments, preached, taught, and comforted the faithful, helping to establish parishes, schools, and clergy training systems essential to sustaining church life.

Under his leadership, the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada grew from a small missionary presence into a structured and enduring institution.

Education, Faith, and Identity

Bishop Budka strongly supported education—Catholic, bilingual, and cultural. He relied on religious sisters, brothers, and priests to build schools and sponsored lay leaders in higher education so they could serve their communities with integrity and responsibility. While encouraging Ukrainian immigrants to become good Canadians, he worked tirelessly to preserve their religious and cultural identity.

Trial, Persecution, and Martyrdom

After resigning as bishop for Canada due to failing health, Bishop Budka returned to Ukraine, where he continued his ministry under increasingly oppressive regimes. In 1945, he was arrested by Soviet authorities, convicted on false charges, and imprisoned in a labour camp near Karaganda, Kazakhstan. He died there on 28 September 1949, remaining faithful until the end.

Beatification and Feast Day

In 2001, Pope John Paul II declared Bishop Budka Blessed, recognizing him among the martyrs of the Soviet era.
28 September is observed as the feast day of Blessed Nykyta Budka.

Legacy

Bishop Budka is remembered as a pioneer missionary, defender of faith, anti-Communist dissident, and martyr. His life of obedience, work, and love of Christ continues to inspire charitable service and community leadership.
